Shopping for toys... burning fields

Had to take the kids out to get a birthday present for a boy in Frances' class last night... so we headed to the only place in town for the best town around... .Santa Plaza...  The name really says it all.. it's like a Christmas wonderland... dolls, soccer balls, hair extensions, plastic christmas trees, eggs, canned meat, and car jacks.. the wonderful thing about the place is that it takes Visa..  It's right near our home, so it actually isn't a bad place to go.. the toys aisles are stocked with the best Chinese plastic toys you can find..

On the way home from school yesterday I noticed a man near the side of the highway burning his field. He had a giant fire going and the area around him looked burnt and was smoking.. this is a common occurrence here and you see it everywhere when you drive through the countryside. I'm assuming it is Malawi's version of slash and burn agriculture, and it seems that alot of people are doing it now, right before the rains hit.. It leaves a constant "camping" scent in the air.. The fires appear to seem controlled, its just funny to see areas of land so close to the city center burning. I stopped by our local Catholic Cathedral yesterday to pick up some eggs from the convent that is located on the grounds there... Unfortunately no one answered the door but I hope to return today.. Apparently they have the best eggs in town. Not much else to report.. Michelle is busy with work at the hospital as they are currently short staffed for the next two weeks.. Up to her neck in it.. Again, be thankful for all we have back home.  Ok, headed to teach fourth grade about paper weaving!!! should be fun.
